Don’t Feed the Animals

Don't Feed the Animals from Metro Vancouver on Vimeo.

It may seem like the right thing to do, but feeding wildlife brings with it a whole bunch of problems. Find out why you shouldn’t try to help Mother Nature and learn how feeding wild creatures can actually put them in danger in the long run with this video from 2006, which has valuable insights that still hold true today.

Our local wildlife includes some cute little animals. And sometimes they look so hungry. What harm could there be in sharing some of your lunch? Unfortunately, there is a problem with feeding the animals. It’s all about balance. Nature is like a finely tuned orchestra. The birds, the bugs, the rodents. They all have their role to play. Feeding animals also leads to all kinds of bad behaviour. Some animals thrive at the expense of others. Animals like squirrels and geese can lose their fear of people and grow aggressive. Most of the time, people put out the wrong food anyway and the uneaten food can attract rats and crows. Nature has just enough food for everyone already and food is Nature’s way of tuning the orchestra. So leave the feeding to Nature and just enjoy the music! And don’t forget, wherever you live in Metro Vancouver, there’s a regional park just waiting to be explored.
